Joseph Jewell

Dr. Joseph S. Jewell is the John Bogdanoff Associate Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue University, where he advises 15 graduate students as leader of the Boeing/AFOSR Mach 6 Quiet Tunnel (BAM6QT) research group, and is also leading the reassembly and recommissioning of the HYPULSE reflected shock/expansion tunnel at Purdue. Prior to joining the Purdue faculty in 2019, Dr. Jewell spent over 5 years as a research scientist at the US Air Force Research laboratory, after winning the NRC’s Research Associateship fellowship to support work on hypersonic boundary layer transition and instrumentation in the AFRL Mach 6 Ludwieg Tube at WPAFB. He received his BS and PhD from Caltech, supported by the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship, and master’s degrees from the University of Michigan and the University of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.

Dr. Jewell, an AIAA Associate Fellow, serves on the Aerodynamic Measurement Technology Technical Committee of the AIAA and is liaison to the Thermophysics Technical Committee. He was also a US representative on the NATO RTO/AVT-200 Task Force on Hypersonic Laminar-Turbulent Transition, for which he received the NATO Panel Excellence Award (2019) and is a Sub-Task Lead for two current NATO Task Forces, focused on Hypersonic Turbulence and Hypersonic Boundary Layer Transition on Complex Geometries.  He is a registered Professional Engineer (Michigan P.E. license number 68851), an ONR Young Investigator (2021) and actively consults for industry and government as a SME on both classified and unclassified hypersonic programs.
