Tech Diplomacy Mission Focused on Securing Trusted Semiconductor Supply Chain

WASHINGTON, DC & TAIPEI, TAIWAN – For the first time since Keith Krach accepted the position as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the US-Taiwan Business Council (USTBC), former U.S. Under Secretary of State and Tech Diplomat will host a distinguished delegation of U.S. business leaders in Taiwan from September 2-5, 2024.

The Krach-led delegation will include USTBC President Rupert Hammond-Chambers, members of the Council’s Board of Directors, and business executives from some of the most important tech companies in the world, including AWS, Dolby, Google, IBM, Qualcomm, Synopsys, TSMC, and others. During the visit–Krach’s second this year and fourth in four years–the group will engage with Taiwan’s most prominent tech leaders and senior government officials to promote the innovation and adoption of trusted technology, supporting investments in new technologies, such as semiconductors, AI, cloud computing, 5G/6G and others, and deepening cooperation between Taiwan and the U.S. to ensure a vibrant tech ecosystem.

The USTBC delegation will also attend SEMICON Taiwan, the premier global microelectronics event. As a leader in a new category of Tech Diplomacy, integrating technology expertise, Silicon Valley strategies and foreign policy tools, Krach will deliver keynote remarks at a sold-out session focused on the semiconductor industry’s role in shaping global affairs.

“I am honored to lead the US-Taiwan Business Council delegation back to Taiwan,” said Keith Krach, Chairman of the USTBC and Krach Institute for Tech Diplomacy at Purdue. “Expanding our commercial ties, incentivizing investments in both directions, as well as working together to fortify trusted tech supply chains–is essential for the economic, technological, scientific, and national security interests of the free world.”

Krach’s return to Taiwan reaffirms the Krach Institute’s longstanding commitment to Taiwan’s democracy. In 2020, then-U.S. Under Secretary of State Krach brokered the onshoring of TSMC to the United States, paving the way for the $280 billion CHIPS and Science Act and more than $450 billion of new private-sector investment in U.S. semiconductor manufacturing. Krach’s historic 2020 visit to Taiwan as the highest-ranking U.S. diplomat in 41 years ushered in the current era of unparalleled U.S.-Taiwan ties, yielding Taiwan’s entry into the Clean Network, the Lee Economic Prosperity Partnership, the U.S.-Taiwan Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement, and paved the way to the Initiative on 21st-Century Trade.

The Institute previously welcomed Taiwan’s Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao to its campus and, during his August 2023 visit, Krach presented the Tech Freedom Award to then-President Tsai Ing-wen.
