You started your career in finance more than 30 years ago as a senior investment officer at the World Bank's International Finance Corporation. Now you're at the helm of an investment company that manages more than one trillion dollars in assets. That's huge. What was your goal for yourself as a young man when you started out?

Well, actually, to be very honest, as any other young kid starting out, I didn't expect to be where I am today.

I don't think so, that's a lot of change! It's better to be lucky than smart, I would say. The reality is, and I say this to everyone now that I recruit, that when you start out your career, you may not know where you're going to end up. It is a journey, not a destination, but do manage your life in three to four year intervals and always take stock every three to four years. Your first year, you're really learning. The second year you're contributing at your full capacity. And then by the third year, you're really trying to determine where you want to go next. And I think that having that three or four year intervals, a pause every three to four years kind of helps.
