What leadership competency are you currently working on? What purposeful actions are you taking to build that competency?

Well, that's a great question. I think the biggest leadership competency that I'm trying to work on is really focus and not just focus but also better delegation. I think I have four new team members in the last year and a half and they're growing and they're getting into their roles, and they're finally at the point where I really can be a lot more hands off. Obviously, in the very beginning stages of any employee's career, you have to be a lot more focused on supporting them, and I'm excited to be able to take some of my focus away from supporting to them in some of the day to day pieces and really getting back into the strategy and really reconnecting with my network itself. This is our 10th anniversary and as I mentioned, we're focusing on building a global ambition statement, and the idea behind that is that I want to be able to kind of set a strategy for gay equality for the next 10 years with input from as many organizations as possible, and then have the business community really support us in doing that. So, from a leadership competency, it's really, I think, taking what we've done to a new level and to the next level so that we can actually make more impact, so that requires focus and that really does require more delegation because that really will take a great deal more of my time than it has in the past.
Vy Tran learned a tough lesson as a first-time manager – you can’t please everyone. Having to “drive accountability” while also being a self-described “people pleaser” required Vy to dig deep and re-think how she communicates with her team.
Failing forward is an essential skill not just at work but in life. For Vy Tran, learning from her mistakes has made her a more effective and influential leader.
