Antonio Neri maintains strong professional relationships by asking himself a very simple question: what can I do for them vs. what can they do for me? He says that’s the best way to build a strong network because payback will likely happen sometime down the road.

You’re a global citizen, you have lived all over the world, you speak four languages. I would imagine you have a pretty vast network as a result. What specific tools or strategies do you use to build your network in order to keep multiplying your influence and your impact?

This is a question I get all the time from my employees, when I do some coaching or mentoring, which are two different things, but you know, what should I be focusing on? Well, first, you have to establish a clear set of goals and objectives for yourself, establish that.
And then the second piece of this is nurture your network, nurture your relationships, because in the end, you know, people ask me what I want to take with me when I move on, whatever the time is, it’s the people, the people, the network in which you have done for them. Whether you’re a CEO or not, in the end, it’s building those relationships.
And that’s why generally speaking, you know, wherever I go, I’m always generally well received, in the sense that those relationships are still alive. And you have to spend time nurturing them. And the key is what you can do for them versus what they can do for you. Because if you could do something for them to help, you know it’s an investment that eventually will have a payback sometime down the road. But it starts with intentions, right? That’s why I’m trying to help as many employees as we can in the communities we’re in. I know if I give something, they will give something back.
