Masking while flying has been a hot topic, but the “masks” I’m talking about aren’t for passengers. Also called “filters,” these masks are for airplane radar altimeters, which are devices that use wireless signals to help pilots estimate the height of the plane during landing. Recently, there have been questions on whether some of the 5G signals might interfere with altimeters.
We all want to ensure aviation safety and proper functioning of all essential gears. And there is a clear, viable solution in this case: For those altimeters that did not have the necessary filters, they simply need to be updated with spectrum masks — without having to rebuild the whole plane.
